My “12” project, shot monthly throughout 2019, is an exploration of myself, intimacy, and femininity. Responding to the media, music, personal conversations, and art I took in, I crafted a mood and performance for the camera each month. Inspired by traditional photographers who have worked within self portraiture, and also by cultural icons who are currently shaping female gender performance via social media, I kept my emotion subtle - a blank stare we have all become more accustomed to, and that the masses have begun to imitate. There is also an “other” presence in many of the photographs, a blank that viewers get to fill in for themselves. “12” aims to tell a truth about who I am as a woman in 2019, and aims to reveal a very small piece of who we all are as women. Of course, not all women will see themselves in “12” - but I hope it can resonate in some way, through showing slivers of hope, fear, a loss of control, apathy, infatuation, or the bliss of a free fall.
